A-Class HERS Raters

Air Balancing

Air balancing measures the airflow actually reaching each room and adjusts the system until it matches design. It is what fixes the bedroom that never cools, and what multi-zone and commercial systems need before sign-off.

A system can hold the right charge, move the right total airflow, and still deliver badly. Long runs, sharp turns, crushed flex and dampers left where the installer found them all pull air away from where it was designed to go. The result is a house where one room runs cold and another never catches up, while the equipment runs longer than it should to satisfy the thermostat.

Balancing is the correction. We measure the volume coming out of every supply register and back through every return, compare each to the design value, then adjust dampers and fan settings until the distribution matches the design. Everything measured goes into a test and balance report showing design, actual and percentage for each opening.

What the Testing Involves

  • Airflow measured at every supply register and return
  • Dampers and blower settings adjusted to design CFM
  • Readings taken again after adjustment to confirm the result
  • A test and balance report showing design, actual and percentage

What You Receive

  • A room-by-room test and balance report
  • Design, actual and percentage for every opening
  • A document your inspector, builder or client can read at a glance

Common Questions

Is air balancing the same as a HERS test?

No. HERS testing verifies specific code measures. Balancing is about distribution: getting the designed volume of air to each room. Some projects need both, and we do them in the same visit.

Will balancing fix a room that never gets cool?

Often, yes, if the system has the capacity and the duct work can carry it. If the cause is an undersized run or a crushed duct, balancing will show that clearly so the fix is targeted instead of guessed at.

How long does it take?

A typical single-family home takes a few hours depending on the number of registers. Commercial spaces depend on the number of units and diffusers.
